Iodine

Iodine is an essential nutrient. People with access to iodized salt, seafood, and certain vegetables are able to get enough iodine from their diet. But in most respects this is untrue. Even soils close to the sea are becoming exhausted of minerals; outside of kelp products, sea foods are not high in iodine; flours are having iodine replaced with bromide; and on the whole the population is deficient in iodine.

Your thyroid hormones are essential for overall health. They help regulate:

  • Body temperature

  • Brain development and mental activity

  • Breathing

  • Heart health

  • Metabolism and digestion

Your body can’t make thyroid hormones without iodine. The amount of iodine in your system can affect how much thyroid hormone your thyroid produces.

Your thyroid gland, part of your endocrine system, traps iodine in your system and turns it into thyroid hormones. If your body makes too much of the hormone (hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism), it can affect critical bodily functions.

Lugol’s solution contains 100 mg/mL of potassium iodide and 50 mg/mL of iodine - a very beneficial ratio of the important iodine groups.

Dosage

In iodine deficiency, the dose recommendation is 6 drops a day for three months as a loading dose which is the amount of time required to restore healthy levels. After this a maintenance dose of 2 drops daily will suffice.
